In the early paleolithic period, there were traces of ancient human activity in the territory of Ukraine. The term "Ukraine" was first used in the history of Ross (1187), meaning "land of the frontier". In 1237-1241, the Mongol golden horde (of the country) west captured Kiev. Later, Lithuania and Poland ruled Ukraine. In 1654, the Cossack leader of Ukraine, helmelianizki, entered into a formal merger with the Russian tsar. Since then, Ukraine has had its own government, but it has not played a substantive role. He joined the Soviet union in 1922 (western Ukraine joined in 1939). On July 16, 1990, Ukraine's supreme Soviet adopted the declaration on the sovereignty of Ukraine. On August 24, 1991, Ukraine declared its independence.
